Tooth staining can have a psychological and social impact on a person. Staining has several intrinsic and extrinsic etiologic factors which can result in mild to severe staining causing an aesthetic challenge.

Three main categories of tooth discoloration are:

  1. Extrinsic Teeth Stains: An extrinsic tooth stain is staining on the surface of the tooth. It occurs when stain particles, such as pigmented residue from food or drink, build-up in the film of protein that covers the tooth enamel. Extrinsic tooth stains are typically caused by tobacco use or by regularly drinking coffee and tea, wine or cola drinks. This type of tooth stain responds well to regular dental cleaning and brushing the teeth with whitening toothpaste.
  2. Intrinsic Teeth Stains: An intrinsic tooth stain is staining below the surface of the tooth. It occurs when stain-causing particles work through the exterior of the tooth and accumulate within the tooth enamel. Excessive fluoride use and also have been associated with intrinsic factors, especially in children. An intrinsic tooth stain is trickier to remove, but it can be done. An intrinsic tooth stain may require bleaching using professional or at-home chemical teeth-whitening products.
  3. Age-Related Teeth Stains: Age-related teeth stains combine the results of both intrinsic and extrinsic tooth discoloration. Because the core tissue of your teeth, the dentin, naturally yellows over time, teeth discolor with age. As we age, the enamel that covers the tooth becomes thinner, allowing the dentin to show through. These intrinsic causes of discoloration combined with extrinsic causes such as the effects of certain foods, beverages, and tobacco, will cause most adults teeth to discolor with age.

Everyone deserves to enjoy a smile free from tooth discoloration. Thankfully, modern dentistry has options for all types of teeth stains. With one or more of these procedures, you can say goodbye to yellow, dark, and white stains on teeth .

Generally speaking, teeth whitening options fall into four broad categories. They include:

    1. BLEACHING: At our clinic we do two types of bleaching procedure:
      • In office bleaching system: The procedure usually requires only one office visit. We will apply either a protective gel to your gums or a rubber shield to protect your gums. Bleaching gel is then applied to the teeth. A special light or laser might be used to enhance the action of the whitening agent. Not all offices offer this type of system so speak with your dentist and see if this is an option. This session lasts 10 to 15 minutes.
      • Home bleaching: Inorder to enchance the effect of in office bleaching or if the stains are not so severe we provide you with customizied trays and bleaching syatem so that you can do bleaching at home.

While there are certain defect of the teeth in which the discoloration cannot be corrected by bleaching alone for those we require non invasive procedures like:

    1. MICROABRASION: Microabrasion is a procedure in which a layer in micometre is removed from tooth structure .
    2. DIRECT VENEERS: In this process also a layer of tooth structure (0.5-1 mm) have been removed from the tooth structure and the removed layered have been compensated with tooth colored material. It is not time consuming and can be done in single day.
    3. INDIRECT VENEERS: The removed tooth layer (0.5-1 mm) has been compensated by veneers fabricated in the laboratory. Though we require labs for it therefore it is a 2 day procedure. But temporaries can be provided in between the process.
